A lot of the pictures of my two dogs have either a chain or a cable in them. I have people ask (sometimes in an accusatory tone) if my dogs are outside dogs.
Short answer: Mostly.
Long answer: It’s more complicated than a simple yes or no, and frankly, is none of your business.
My dogs are very well cared for. Where they are kept really shouldn’t matter if they are given good food, fresh water, appropriate shelter, and plenty of attention, which they are. But people like to judge others based off one little detail instead of taking a good look at the whole picture. They think that I don’t deserve to own my dogs because they are not inside the house.
Those people can go fuck themselves sideways.
Take a moment and tell me what you think of this dog. Does he look abused, neglected, or mistreated in any way? Does he look sad or stressed about the chain attached to his collar?
Looks like he’s content chilling on his house to me. But I could be wrong, it’s just one picture.
Yet if you cruise through my tumblr photoblog, you’ll see tons of pictures of Flint running and playing, cuddling, hanging out ON HIS CHAIN, and he has an overall happy vibe to him. Because he is a happy dog. If he was not a happy dog, I wouldn’t have happy pictures of him hanging out with Conker or playing in the woods. Oh, take note on that last bit of the previous sentence there.
In the woods.
My dog gets off his chain all the time. Our woods walks are at least an hour and a half long. We play for an hour in the yard. Most of the time when I’m hanging with the dogs, they are unhooked. We do these things every day. And even when the dog is on his chain, he’s usually hanging out or sleeping. Seriously, why does it matter if the dog is sunbathing on the deck with a chain attached to his collar? He’d still be sunbathing on the deck in the exact same spot if that chain were unhooked.
The dogs can reach one another and play while tethered, and they have toys and chews as well if they don’t feel like playing. So it’s not like they have absolutely nothing to do while out in the yard.
My dogs can take a piss or a shit when they need to, which is far more freedom than a lot of American dogs get. Sounds better to me than being stuck in a crate all day, or a kennel with less room than the tethers provide. And since they are very well cared for, I fail to see why it’s such a terrible thing that they stay outside during the day. They WANT to be out there, and if they were kept in the house, would constantly be asking to be let outside. Yes, some dogs do prefer to be outside and no, there is nothing wrong with them.
I’s true that some dogs on chains are neglected or abused. But the same goes for some inside dogs, some kenneled dogs, some dogs in fenced yards, and some crated dogs. It can happen anywhere no matter what method of containment is used.
The problem is not the chain, it’s the person who owns the dog. Go after them for failing to provide basic care for their dogs, not make stupid laws about how, when, or where a dog can or cannot be chained. That hurts more good people than bad. Don’t fucking do it.
